Can Lightspace Laser Projectors Be Used Outdoors? Are They Rainproof? All You Need to Know
Mar 14,2026
With the growing popularity of outdoor performances, cultural tourism lighting, courtyard parties and other scenarios, many people ask: Can laser projectors be used outdoors? Are they really rainproof? The answer is clear: some laser projectors can be used outdoors, but not all are rainproof. It mainly depends on the equipment’s protection rating and designed application. Today we will explain it in plain language.

First, it is clear that whether a laser projector can be used outdoors depends on two key points: protection rating and usage environment. Ordinary indoor laser projectors have no waterproof design, with large gaps in the body and unsealed interfaces. Using them outdoors directly will not only easily damage internal components due to dust and moisture, but also cause short circuits and equipment burnout in rainy conditions. Such devices are only suitable for indoor use and strictly prohibited for open-air outdoor applications.
Specialized outdoor laser projectors adopt special protection for outdoor environments, with the core indicator being the IP rating. Most outdoor models have a protection rating of IP54 or higher:
IP54 means the device is protected against dust ingress and can withstand splashing water from any direction, suitable for light rain and dew.
For long-term open-air installation (e.g., cultural tourism landmarks, fixed outdoor stages), IP65 or higher is required, which provides complete dust protection and resistance to low-pressure water jets, ensuring safe use in moderate to heavy rain.
A common misunderstanding is confusing "outdoor use" with "rainproof". Some outdoor models only have dustproof and slight splash-proof designs, suitable for temporary outdoor use (e.g., temporary outdoor performances away from rain), but cannot withstand long-term exposure to rain. Only devices clearly marked "rainproof" or "waterproof" with qualified IP ratings can work normally in rainy weather.
In addition, two more points for outdoor use:
Avoid direct exposure to the sun, as high temperatures shorten the laser life and affect performance.
Ensure stable fixation and protected wiring; wrap interfaces with waterproof tape for extra protection.
In summary: Laser projectors can be used outdoors if they are marked outdoor-specific with IP54 or higher. For rainy-day use, make sure the rating is IP65 or above to avoid equipment damage, so you can safely enjoy stunning outdoor laser visual effects.
